Creating a guest list is one of the first
things that you do when you get engaged. The people on this list are the people
you will remember forever because they witnessed your special day. Guest lists
can get extremely long which makes for a costly wedding. However, there are
some tips that you can use to limit the time and frustration when creating this
list.

1. Sit down with both sets
of soon-to-be in-laws and create a master list with every single person that
you would love to invite. You can use this later on to pick and choose the
people that will actually receive an invitation.
2. Get quotes from a
variety of different venues regarding the minimum and maximum guest count and
price per person. Be realistic and discuss a maximum number of guests so there
are no surprises when it is time to pay the bill.
3. Mark everyone on your
master list who are VIP’s with a star. These people are generally family and
your closest friends.
4. Decide whether you want
to give single guests a plus one and whether children are invited.
5. When creating your
“final” list, begin with your VIPs and keep families and couples together. This
will help a lot when you move on to create your seating chart. Keep adding on
people based on importance until you approach your maximum.
6. Don’t let guilt or
obligation force you to add people onto your list. Just because they invited
you to their wedding, you don’t have to invite them to yours. If that is the
case, they don’t belong.
7. Only invite within your
maximum number of guests. Do not over-invite because you expect many people to
not come. You never know how your RSVPs will look until it happens.

There
are many other scenarios that can occur when constructing your guest list. It
is important to make strict rules, and follow them. Don’t let family or friends
pressure you into inviting more people than necessary.
